Barry Shirley with his new Road King and Road King Cab
Mesa Boogie Road King Advanced Amplifier Array

Dear Mesa Engineering,

Its good to be the king! Or at least it’s good to have the king, Road King of course. Received shipment of my Road King Head and matching Road King 2X12 Cab about two weeks ago from my local Mesa Pro Center, Musicians Supply here in Columbia, SC. What a wonderful piece of craftsmanship it is too.

I've been using a Rect-O-Verb Combo for 2 1/2 years so I was a bit familiar with the front panel. But the juicy bit is the back panel! Choices of power amps, cab selection, and rectifiers, well to ask for anything more would be pure greed. Its amazing to me all that could be under the hood of one machine but it is and it’s all very useful - Not just a load of gadgets that don't work. I have an ultra clean sound, a crunch sound, a bluesy lead sound, and a lead sound I call "The Business". You only have to tweak the front controls in very small increments to find new territory. This amp is the Holy Grail in my estimation. Give it a try.

Prior to the Road King and Rect-O-Verb I used a Mark II B for 21 years. That little amp went (still have it) on thousands of gigs, including around the world on USO tours. To this day, not one of these amps has ever broken down. Mind you I've always used road cases. Protect your investment! Only maintenance ever was re-tubing them.

I've used Mesa gear exclusively since 1980 and been very satisfied with the sound, reliability, and consistency of their gear. Happy to keep using it. I turned 50 last year and consider myself very lucky to be able to still be in a working band making a living. It’s a luxury really. I have one rule as far as gear - I always allow myself nice instruments and amps to work with. It makes the job easier and certainly more enjoyable. Go ahead… Allow yourself. Check out the Mesa gear, you won’t go wrong.

Thanks for making something that lasts. “Mesanites” Unite!

Regards,
Barry Shirley
